They keep going up (another 4% overall). Between the Nikon Japan D70 press conference and the latest Dempa Shinbun article, the following numbers are what Nikon is now using in describing market share (in unit volume):
| Worldwide Digital (all) | % Growth | Nikon Digital (all) | % Market | Worldwide DSLR | |
| 2001 | 15.87m | -- | 1.45m | 9% | -- |
| 2002 | 28.38m | 79% | 3.36m | 12% | 0.25m |
| 2003 | 46m | 62% | 5.5m | 12% | 1m |
| 2004 | 62m | 35% | 8.6m | 14% | 2m* |
| 2005 | 72m | 16% | -- | -- | 3.3m |
| 2006 | 80m | 11% | -- | -- | 5m |
*Nikon claims 800k, or 40% of market (described as the leading market share). This share is down slightly from what they claimed at the D2h product launch.
Again, market growth is slowing in compact cameras, still high in DSLR sales. Additionally, Nikon said the initial production volume of the D70 will be 70,000 units a month, and 60,000 units a month for the 8700.
